Thoughtful Thursday - September 3rd

OMG we're back again! Always a weird one on these short weeks. This week’s Thoughtful Thursday is actually about sustainability (The Dazzler was too busy with his massage and PT clients to finish his piece this week, but will have some massage and functional mobility stuff for you all over the next couple of weeks).

Clinic Updates

Thanks again to everyone for being nice people and wearing masks in clinic so it doesn't get awks for everyone.

Saturdays at Marylebone: We now have chiropractic and massage therapy available at our branch in town on Saturdays from this week - give Tom a buzz on 0207 724 4004 if you would like to get in. (We may also have a cheeky promo for massage on at the moment, if you ask him REALLY nicely.)

Now that the summer has ended, all of your favourites are back as usual from next week (including Katie Chimes adding an extra Monday morning at Marylebone).

Podcast(s) of the Week

Craig has TWO(!) new episodes for you this week. First he spoke to Paul McCrossin, the president of the United Chiropractic Association (UCA), where they had a chat about the last six months and how Paul has led the UCA members through the global pandemic. Fun fact: back in the 1990s, Paul and Craig studied together in Melbourne at RMIT, so be warned – some old stories are bound to pop up.

If you enjoyed last week’s episode with Sam Wang, Co-Founder of Chicago-based Chiro One, then it’s probably pretty likely you’ll enjoy our next podcast with the other Chiro One Co-Founder, Stuart Bernsen. Both of our Chiro.London Co-Founders (Craig and Luke) joined Stuart for this episode. Fun fact: Bailey, our assistant in Putney, worked for these guys in the States.

You can listen to all of our podcasts on our website here, and also on other platforms such as SpotifyApple and Google.

Shameless Plug(s) of the Week

Did you know every week, 13 million items of clothing end up in UK landfill? Or that it would take one person 13 years to drink the amount of water needed to make just one cotton t-shirt and pair of jeans?

If you’ve seen #SecondHandSeptember trending on social media lately and wondered what it’s all about, it’s an initiative by Oxfam to encourage sustainable fashion choices by pledging to only buy second hand garments for 30 days (or more). So if you’ve never bought vintage, scoured a flea market or stepped inside a thrift shop before, here are some tips to help start you on your sustainable style journey…

  • Oxfam now have an online store, so you don’t even have to rummage around your local charity shop to find the best buys – they’re ready and waiting, at the click of a mouse.

  • Struggling to find fashionable pieces and need some inspiration? Celebrity stylist and occasional client Sarah Kate Byrne is known as the Queen of Vintage. She’s partnered with Irish racecourse Leopardstown to show how easy it is to style a special occasion outfit, using inexpensive vintage pieces, charity shop finds and even a dress from her mother’s wardrobe. Still have some questions on how to style it up? Join Sarah Kate on Tuesday, September 8th at 7:30pm on her Instagram for a live chat on all things stylish and sustainable.

  • If thrift shops aren’t your thing and you prefer to spend a little more for quality, then check out Circa Vintage in Fulham. They’ve done all the hard work to source the best vintage pieces, and even have some rare finds from designers such as Chanel, and Ossie Clark and Paco Rabanne. You can even search by size and decade on their website.

  • Of course, ‘sustainable’ doesn’t always mean buying second hand – it can mean breathing new life into a garment you already own by mending it or upcycling it into something new. Oxfam have some great tips on ways to do this – from the simple fix (how to mend holes in your jeans) to the passion project (how to turn a beach frock into a wedding dress). Our favourite little haberdashery shop The Sewing Rooms has all the supplies you’ll need, and they even have an onsite tailor if you’d prefer to leave the work to a professional.

If you’re taking part in Second Hand September and want to show-off your sustainable bargain buys or clever upcycling, don’t forget to tag @OxfamGB on Instagram or Twitter and use #SecondHandSeptember.

Ask the Team

Grant Munro DC answers your question…

Can chiropractic help with arthritis?

There are over 100 different types of arthritis – by far the most common being osteoarthritis, where the joint or joints become progressively stiff and painful over time, to the point where it can affect what we do in our day-to-day lives.

Most of the time, an old injury or prolonged repetitive postures will change the way the muscles around the joint work together, the joint will no longer move as it was initially intended and it will start to stiffen up. Chiropractic care helps get these stuck joints moving again, and research and experience shows it can help increase strength and coordination around the joint and throughout the body. However, it generally works best when combined with some kind of gentle exercise, which your chiropractor will be able to advise on during the initial phase of your care.

Thanks for tuning in again and am looking forward to reading Daz's thoughts next week.

Have a good one,

Drew
